Canine babesiosis is a disease in dogs caused by infection with the blood parasite Babesia sp. Infection with Babesia sp. can lead to hemolytic anemia, which has significant negative effects, particularly in K-9 dogs. The objective of this study was to detect the presence of Babesia sp. blood parasites, calculate the percentage of parasitemia, and analyze the differential leukocyte profile in K-9 dogs at the Directorate of Police Canine Unit, Baharkam Polri. A total of 84 blood samples were collected and analyzed using microscopic examination. The results showed that the infection rate of Babesia sp. was 13%. The highest infection rate was found in Malinois breed dogs at 9%, while based on sex, the highest rate was found in male dogs at 7%. The average percentage of parasitemia detected was below 1%, classified as low parasitemia. The leukocyte showed lymphocytopenia and neutrophilia in K-9, indicating a possible immune response. Total of 19 dogs exhibited splenomegaly, and among them, 14 (16%) tested positive for Babesia sp. These findings highlight the importance of early detection and management of parasitic infections in K-9 dogs to maintain their health for operational duties. |
