Banten Bay is a coastal area with intense anthropogenic and industrial activities, which may affect water quality. Phytoplankton play a vital role in aquatic ecosystems and can be used as indicators of water fertility. This study aims to assess the fertility status of Banten Bay based on the phytoplankton community structure. Sampling was conducted in July, August, and October 2024 at 19 observation stations. Data collected included phytoplankton composition and water quality parameters. Phytoplankton distribution was mapped using Surfer 16, while Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to analyze the relationship between phytoplankton and water quality. Fertility status was evaluated using the Nygaard Index and TRIX. Results showed that phytoplankton abundance was higher in the western part of the bay and in estuarine waters compared to marine areas. Estuarine areas were dominated by Cyanophyceae, while marine waters were dominated by Bacillariophyceae. These differences were linked to water quality variations such as higher DIN, temperature, orthophosphate, and chlorophyll-a in estuarine waters, and higher DO, salinity, clarity, and zooplankton in marine areas. Based on the Nygaard Index, Banten Bay is mesotrophic, while TRIX indicates eutrophic conditions, suggesting ongoing eutrophication that may disrupt ecosystem balance.
