The disparity in economic complexity among APEC countries reflects differences in export structure, diversity and sophistication of production, and the scale of inward investment flows. This study aims to analyze the influence of trade openness and foreign direct investment (FDI) on economic complexity in 17 APEC countries from 2011 to 2022 using a dynamic panel data approach with the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM). The results indicate that the APEC region exhibits substantial variation in economic structures, with wide dispersion in ECI, trade openness, and FDI values. Trade openness negatively affects economic complexity, while FDI has a positive impact. However, the interaction between trade openness and FDI shows a negative effect. These findings highlight the importance of enhancing export quality and product diversification, along with optimizing the role of FDI through technology transfer and strengthening domestic production capacity in high value-added industries.
