Abstract: Kayu cepat tumbuh yang dibudidayakan di Indonesia seringkali memiliki kualitas rendah. Shou sugi ban merupakan metode pembakaran tradisional Jepang untuk menghasilkan artificial weathered-board. Teknik ini dianggap efisien dalam meningkatkan ketahanan, kestabilan dimensi, serta nilai estetika kayu. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh kombinasi waktu dan jarak pembakaran terhadap kualitas permukaan serta sifat fisis dan mekanis kayu mahoni dan mindi. Penelitian menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap dengan tiga perlakuan yakni kontrol, pembakaran pada jarak 5 cm selama 4 menit, dan 10 cm selama 8 menit, masing-masing dengan tiga ulangan. Pengaruh kombinasi lama waktu dan jarak bakar yang ditetapkan bervariasi terhadap karakteristik permukaan dan fisis-mekanis weathered-board yang dihasilkan. Secara umum, weathered-board yang dihasilkan lebih gelap, lebih kering, lebih tahan air, dan lebih lentur; sedangkan kerapatan, berat jenis dan modulus of rupture-nya tidak berkurang secara signifikan. Karakteristik weathered-board juga dipengaruhi oleh jenis kayu. Jarak bakar 5 cm selama 4 menit merupakan kombinasi pembakaran yang paling efektif untuk untuk menghasilkan weathered-board dari kayu mahoni dan mindi.
Fast-growing wood cultivated in Indonesia is often of low quality. Shou sugi ban is a traditional Japanese burning method used to create artificial weathered-boards. This method offers an efficient way to enhance durability, dimensional stability, and aesthetics. This study examines the effects of burning time and distance in the shou sugi ban process on the surface quality and physical-mechanical properties of mahogany and mindi wood. A completely randomized design was used with three treatments: control, burning at 5 cm for 4 minutes, and at 10 cm for 8 minutes, each with three replications. The combination of varying burn duration and distance significantly affects the surface and physical-mechanical characteristics of the resulting weathered-boards. In general, the weathered boards produced are darker, drier, more water-resistant, and more flexible, while their density, specific gravity, and modulus of rupture (MOR) do not decrease significantly. The characteristics of the weathered boards are also influenced by the wood species. A burning distance of 5 cm for 4 minutes is the most effective combination for producing weathered-boards from mahogany and mindi wood.
