Lignin isolated from black liquor has the potential to be converted into biopolymers and chemicals. However, conventional isolation methods using mineral acids have drawbacks, including high corrosivity, contain impurities like sulfur, and a tendency to result lignin with condensed structures. This research explores utilization of organic acids (oxalic acid and maleic acid) to isolate lignin from Eucalyptus black liquor at pH 2 and 3 with the aim of improving lignin characteristics and support green chemistry. Lignin was isolated and characterized based on yield, moisture and ash content, purity, functional groups, monomer type, thermal properties, morphology, and total phenolic contents. Lignin isolated with maleic acid at pH 2 (MA 2) demonstrated the highest quality. It exhibited low moisture and ash content, highest purity, phenolic hydroxyl groups (phOH), total phenolics content (TPC), and equivalent weight. In contrast, although oxalic acid at pH 2 resulted in the highest lignin yield, the isolated lignin quality was the lowest across most parameters. |
