Ghost fishing, caused by the loss of synthetic fishing gear in aquatic environments, poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems due to the long degradation time of synthetic materials. While synthetic fishing gear offers high durability, it negatively impacts the environment when lost. A potential solution to this issue is the use of biodegradable materials, such as ramie fiber. However, ramie fiber has limitations, including lower breaking strength and reduced durability. This study aims to enhance the performance of ramie fiber by coating it with polyvinyl alcohol, a hydrophilic, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly polymer. The results showed that PVA coating increased the breaking strength of ramie fiber by 38.99% and its elongation by 32.59%. Additionally, the technical lifespan of PVA-coated ramie fiber was extended to 7 months and 1 week, compared to 5 months and 1 weeks for uncoated fiber. These findings demonstrate that PVA-coated ramie fiber is a viable alternative for biodegradable fishing gear materials, such as bubu traps, supporting sustainable fisheries and mitigating ghost fishing impacts.
