Reaction wood is the part of the wood formed as a response to environmental factors or mechanical stress during tree growth. Reaction wood generally has different characteristics compared to its opposite wood. This study aims to examine the physical and mechanical properties of reaction wood from melinjo (Gnetum gnemon Linn.) and compare it with opposite wood. Wood samples were taken from a 10-year-old leaning tree with a diameter of 20 cm leaning tree. Physical properties tested include moisture content, specific gravity, density, and volume shrinkage, while mechanical properties tested include modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), and hardness. The results show that melinjo wood forms reaction wood similar to compression wood and exhibits higher physical and mechanical properties than opposite wood, although the differences are not statistically significant. Reaction wood from melinjo has higher density, specific gravity, volume shrinkage, moisture content, MOR, MOE, and hardness compared to opposite wood.
