Abstract: Bekantan (Nasalis larvatus) merupakan salah satu satwa primata langka dan endemik Pulau Kalimantan.
Proboscis monkeys (Nasalis larvatus) are rare and endemic to Borneo. The location that still supports the existence of these primates is the Katingan Mentaya Project area, Central Kalimantan, which is managed by PT Rimba Makmur Utama. The purpose of this study was to identify the condition of the population and distribution of proboscis monkeys in the Katingan Mentaya Project Area, Central Kalimantan. Observations of population conditions and distribution of proboscis monkeys were carried out using a ketinting boat (boat survey) by combing the Katingan River and Mentaya River which flank the Katingan Mentaya Project area with a concentrated population count in the morning (05.30-08.00) and afternoon (15.30-18.00). The results of the study were 408 - 776 individual proboscis monkeys divided into 52 groups. There were 35 groups of proboscis monkeys in the Katingan River and 17 groups in the Mentaya River. The correction factor as a multiplier for the maximum population size in the Katingan River and Mentaya River is 1.96 and 1.8, respectively. The population density of proboscis monkeys was 2.76 individuals/km2 or 0.38 groups/km2 and 6.27 individuals/km2 or 0.71 groups/km2, respectively. The results of the calculation of the sex ratio in the Katingan River and Mentaya River were 1:1.2 and 1:0.6, respectively. Proboscis monkeys tend to be more active at temperatures ranging from 27.5-29.4°C and 66%-82% humidity. Food availability, the presence of predators, competitors, and human activities have the potential to influence the population size and distribution of proboscis monkeys.
