In the last ten years, Indonesia has lost millions of hectares of forest, which has resulted in a decline in biodiversity and worsened global climate change. Therefore, in the midst of the deforestation crisis, the concept of waqf-based forests emerged as an innovative alternative for forest conservation in Indonesia. This research uses the systematic literature review (SLR) method to identify research trends, roles, opportunities and challenges of waqf-based forests in Indonesia. The results show that waqf-based forests play a significant role in environmental conservation, economic empowerment and socio-cultural preservation. Waqf-based forests also offer great opportunities to improve community welfare through the use of non-timber forest products and balance the ecosystem. However, waqf-based forest management faces challenges in funding, capacity strengthening and community participation.
