Abstract: Alang-alang (Imperata cylindrica), a perennial rhizomatous grass (Family Poaceae), grows between 60-200 cm, with ribbon-like leaves about 2 cm wide at the base, tapering at the top, with finely serrated edges containing sharp silica crystals that can injure the skin. The rhizome root network is strong and deep, allowing it to adapt to fires. It spreads very quickly through seeds and vegetative reproduction. Native to tropical and subtropical Asia, it has spread to tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Known as a weed, it has many benefits. Traditionally, the leaves are used for roofing, and the leaves, young flowers, and roots can be eaten after cooking. It is also used as a ground cover plant to prevent erosion. The plant is an ingredient in the skincare industry. Decoctions of the plant are used for infections and fever; the roots have astringent, antifebrile, antiviral, diuretic, emollient, haemostatic, restorative, and tonic properties, and are used for nosebleeds, urinary tract bleeding, edema, and jaundice.
