Wood modification is a technique that improves wood quality by enhancing characteristics such as physical properties, dimensional stability, and resistance to wood-destroying organisms. One environmentally friendly approach is wood modification using glycerol-citric acid (GlyCA) compounds. The application of this in situ polyesterification technique to wood veneer, particularly for plywood applications, has never been explored before. This study aims to determine the characteristics of rubberwood veneer (Hevea brasiliensis) and the resulting plywood products at various GlyCA concentrations (25% and 50%) and with different adhesives (epoxy and polyurethane). The results demonstrated that GlyCA-modified wood can reduce the hygroscopic properties of wood, resulting in greater dimensional stability during water immersion tests. FTIR test results also confirmed the wood's increased hydrophobicity. The dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) test showed that the mechanical properties of the modified wood were superior to those of the control wood up to a certain temperature point. However, the adhesive strength of both types of adhesives tested tended to decrease as a result of this modification. |
