Ethylene glycol is a hepatotoxic substance that can injury the liver if ingested in large doses or over a long period of time. Liver damage can be identified by examining blood biochemical parameters, including the activity of the enzyme alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Hepatoprotectors are believed to protect and reduce injury to the liver. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of avocado leaf and cat whiskers extract as hepatoprotectors against ALP and ALT enzyme activity. A total of 16 white rats Sprague Dawley strain were divided into 4 groups, namely the group without treatments, negative control (ethylene glycol 0,75%), avocado leaf extract (300 mg/kg BB), cat whiskers extract (250 mg/kg BB). Blood samples were taken via lateral vein on the 14th and 28th days. Results of study showed that administration of avocado leaf extract and cat’s whisker extract could reduce the activity of ALP and ALT enzyme in white rats induced by ethylene glycol. Avocado leaf extract has the potential to be a better hepatoprotector compared to cat whiskers extract. |
