Abstract: Salah satu aspek penting pengembangan populasi rusa adalah adanya pemahaman tentang sistem reproduksi.
One important aspect in increasing deer population is an understanding of the reproductive system. In deer, estrous in female deer will be more difficult to observe than libido in male deer because it can be seen through the observation of the antlers and body temperature. This study aims to measure the morphometry of deer antlers to determine their correlation with deer age, and to determine the effectiveness to measurement of body surface temperature by infrared camera to detect estrous in deer. This study used two male timor deer (Rusa timorensis) with velvet antlers and five timor deer with hard antlers. The measurement of antlers morphometry was carried out on both velvet and hard antlers types. Thermal measurements were carried out on deer using a rectal thermometer in rectum and a digital infrared thermometer with a distance of 1-2 meters at 9 body surface regions, namely at the ocularis, nostril, buccalis, costalis, axillaris, flank, perianal, digitalis, and testis regions. In the morphometry of the male timor deers’s antlers, their length and diameter have no correlation with the age of deer. Timor deer with hard antlers have higher rectal temperatures and surface temperatures in 8 regions than timor deer with velvet antlers. Infrared cameras can be used in libido detection in timor deer.
