The phosphorylation of lignin is well known as a chemical modification method to improve its fire behaviour as a fire-retardant agent. The isolated lignin of Eucalyptus sp was synthesized with P2O5 into phosphorylated lignin. The isolated lignin was insoluble in water, thus it modified through sulfonation into lignosulfonate, then synthesized with POCl3 into phosphorylated lignosulfonate. This study aimed to analyze the effect of phosphorous addition on the characteristics of modified and phosphorylated Eucalyptus lignin. The characterization includes yield, purity, functional group analysis, morphological analysis, and thermal analysis. The results showed that phosphorylated lignin had higher yield and purity compared to phosphorylated lignosulfonate. The functional groups of phosphorylated lignin showed the presence of lignin characteristic functional groups, while phosphorylated lignosulfonate showed the presence of S=O bond functional groups. Phosphorylated lignin and phosphorylated lignosulfonate have similar physical morphology and still have mineral components. Thermal properties of phosphorylated lignin produced combustion residue and higher Tg temperature than phosphorylated lignosulfonate.
