| dc.description.abstract | This study investigated the properties of plywood made from furfurylated rubberwood (Hevea brasiliensis) veneer at different modification levels. Rubberwood veneers were impregnated with furfuryl alcohol (FA) at different concentrations of 40%, 70% and 100%, using 3% citric acid as a catalyst for FA polymerisation at 103°C. The percentage weight gain (WPG), dynamic mechanical properties (DMA) and functional groups of the furfurylated veneers were analysed. The resulting furfurylated veneer was then used to form three layers of plywood using polyurethane or epoxy resin as an adhesive. Several physical, mechanical and morphological properties of the furfurylated plywood were characterised. Furfurylation slightly decreased the bond strength of PU-bonded plywood at 100% FA, while epoxy-bonded plywood remained unchanged at all FA concentrations. Furfurylation improved the resistance of the plywood to delamination, particularly in the 40% and 100% FA treatments. The formation of furfurylated plywood in this study opens up potential opportunities for the use of low-quality veneers from fast growing wood species to replace high-quality veneers from natural forests. | - |
