dc.description.abstractGastrointestinal parasite infections are common in pets, and some zoonotic parasites can affect their owners' health. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of gastrointestinal parasites in dogs and cats at Vet Partners Nusa Bestari Medical Center, Johor Bahru, Malaysia. In total, 50 fecal samples of dogs and cats were collected from December 2023 to January 2024. Two techniques were used, namely simple fecal flotation and fecal wet mount. Among these two techniques, simple fecal flotation is more sensitive in detecting parasites. The results of this study showed that among the examined dogs and cats, 24.0% (6/25) of the dogs were infected by hookworms and 4.0% (1/25) of the cats were infected by coccidia. The possible hookworm and coccidia species detected were Ancylostoma caninum and Isospora felis, respectively. The risk factors for hookworm infection in dogs include breed and deworming status. Veterinarians should educate their clients to increase awareness of gastrointestinal parasite infection.
dc.description.abstractInfeksi parasit gastrointestinal adalah penyakit yang umum terjadi pada hewan peliharaan dan beberapa parasit bersifat zoonotik juga dapat berdampak pada kesehatan pemiliknya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui prevalensi dan faktor risiko parasit gastrointestinal pada anjing dan kucing di Vet Partners Nusa Bestari Medical Center, Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Sebanyak 25 sampel feses diambil dari anjing dan kucing pada bulan Desember 2023 hingga Januari 2024. Dua teknik digunakan yaitu metode pengapungan dan sediaan ulas feses. Di antara kedua teknik ini, metode pengapungan lebih sensitif dalam mendeteksi parasit. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa di antara anjing dan kucing yang diperiksa, 24.0% (6/25) anjing terinfeksi cacing tambang dan 4.0% (1/25) kucing terinfeksi coccidia. Berdasarkan ciri morfologi spesies cacing tambang dan coccidia yang kemungkinan menginfeksi adalah Ancylostoma caninum dan Isospora felis. Faktor risiko infeksi cacing tambang pada anjing termasuk ras dan status pemberian anthelmintik. Dokter hewan harus mengedukasi kliennya untuk meningkatkan kesadaran akan infeksi parasit gastrointestinal.
