Abstract: Monitoring is an important aspect of conservation, and it is a tool for implementing adaptive management. Various animal observation techniques have been developed to make data collection easier. Rapid development in sound recording technology has opened up opportunities for monitoring animals through bioacoustics. Combined with scientific development in sound analysis bioacoustics technology has become widely implemented to collect wildlife data. The advantage of using passive acoustic monitoring compared to direct observation or field survey are lower cost and less human resources needed in the field, especially in areas with rugged terrain. Bioacoustics technology can also compile more data in shorter time. Use of bioacoustics include assessment of biodiversity, population monitoring, and identification of anthropogenic disturbances, especially poaching. There are challenges in using bioacoustics technology. Those include limitation of equipment, physical and mental condition of the implementer and the survey design. However, a combination of direct surveys and passive acoustic monitoring is promising because it is able to record animal sounds in scattered habitats.
