Independent oil palm smallholders are part of the palm oil supply chain that is slowly required to implement sustainability aspects. Fulfilling the sustainability aspects of smallholder palm oil plantations is not easy because economic motives still dominate the cultivation practices of smallholder oil palm plantations. This research was conducted by conducting field observation, interviews, and discussions with farmers. The collected data and information were analysed to see the implementation of RSPO ISH principles and criteria in the field. Furthermore, a SWOT evaluation was conducted to determine what steps need to be taken to reduce gaps in the fulfilment of sustainable palm oil certification standards. The results show that the implementation of PCI by independent smallholders has reached 73.36% and the on-farm sector dominates their source of livelihood. Therefore, a Strengths-Opportunities (SO) strategy is needed to accelerate sustainable palm oil certification. Financial support and cooperation with various stakeholders are key to facilitating independent smallholders in Segati Village to achieve sustainable palm oil certification.
