Abstract: MAIRED SAFDI DARMA. Activated Kaolinite and Bentonite Adsorptivities for Hexachloroethane. Supervised by KOMAR SUTRIAH and HENNY PURWANINGSIH. Kaolinite and bentonite can be used as adsorbent for pesticides, such as hexachloroethane (HCE). Kaolinite is a mass of clay materials with low content of irons. The chemical composition of kaolinite is hydrous aluminum silicate (2H2O·Al2O3·2SiO2). Bentonite contains 85% montmorillonite with the chemical composition of Al2O3·4SiO2·xH2O. This research was aimed to determine the adsorptivity of activated bentonite and kaolinite absorptivity toward HCE. Kaolinite and bentonite was activated using 30% sulfuric acid in 90 minutes. The result showed that optimum adsorption time for kaolinite and bentonite was 6 and 4 hours, respectively. Kaolinite was better in HCE adsorption with adsorption capacity of 8680.07 mg/g and efficiency value of 89.51% as compared to those of bentonite that was 8662.71 mg/g and efficiency value of 90.61%. Based on this research, HCE adsorption onto kaolinite and bentonite followed Freundlich isotherms.
