| id |
dc.description.abstract | Trypanosomiasis, commonly known as surra, is a horse disease caused by the blood parasite Trypanosoma evansi. This disease has a significant economic impact on the equine farm industry. This study aims to discover T. evansi infection in horses in the Bogor and Bandung regions using molecular techniques. Thirty-three horse blood samples were collected from apparently healthy horses on farms in Bogor and Bandung, West Java. Thin blood smears stained with Giemsa were examined under a light microscope for the presence of parasites. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) approach was used to further identify the RoTat 1.2 VSG gene. The microscopic examination of all samples revealed that all were negative for T. evansi, while the PCR technique revealed that 17 samples were positive for T. evansi. T. evansi infection rates in horses varied by location, with Bogor having a rate of 58.33% and Bandung having a rate of 33.33%. Mares are more susceptible to infection than stallions. The infection rate in mares is higher than in stallions. The results from this study provide baseline information on hemoprotozoan parasite T. evansi infection using a molecular diagnostic technique. | id |
