Meranti (Shorea spp.) is known as important group of timber species in Indonesia that belongs to the Diptercarpaceae family. Due to its high commercial value, exploitation of meranti was very high leading to a significant reduction of natural population size as well as urgent call for conservation action outside its natural habitats. Therefore, a demonstration plot for ex situ conservation stand of five meranti species, namely Shorea palembanica, Shorea mecistopteryx, Shorea stenoptera, Shorea pinanga, and Shorea leprosula, was planned and established in 2004 at Gunung Walat Educational Forest (GWEF), Sukabumi. However, this conservation stand has not been yet thoroughly evaluated. Research through field assessment was carried out in the stand with objectives as follows: i) to determine tree growth, ii) to assess tree health condition, iii) to calculate the potential of carbon uptake and iv) to estimate the wood quality of standing trees based on a non-destructive method.
