Abstract

I frankly admit that I am unable to recall the names of so many generous contributors; among them are also hundreds of respondents and informants who have been purposely kept anonymous. most likely it was Without being fully acknowledged, they who in fact substantiated my endeavours to gain a deeper understanding of the organizational phenomenon in selected rural communities of Java. It is for this reason that I spontaneously and gratefully wish to dedicate the findings of my research to them, and through them to the thousands of village people in the Districts of Cibadak and Kendal. It is my hope indeed that eventually the villagers at large will benefit most from suggested changes in government policy concerning rural reconstruction and development. I envisage that they in a collective sense will be the final judge of my observations and analyses. Villagers have been silent for extended lapses of time already, and it is their tacit message which I have attempted to penetrate, comprehend and reflect in the present study. It is primarily for the sake of scientific communication that my account at this stage has to be cast in a more professional format using appropriate sociological jargon where perhaps colloquial language would fail or be inadequate to communicate my perceptions more precisely. dst. …
