Abstract: Pertambahan jumlah penduduk di Indonesia akan berdampak pada peningkatan permintaan produksi pertanian. Produktivitas yang tinggi dapat dicapai melalui pemenuhan kebutuhan hara tanaman terutama unsur nitrogen (N). Pupuk urea banyak digunakan di Indonesia, dan permintaannya diperkirakan meningkat di masa mendatang. Oleh karena itu perlu dicari sumber pupuk N lainnya sebagai alternatif pelengkap urea. Amonium klorida (NH4Cl) merupakan produk sampingan yang dihasilkan pada industri soda ash. Senyawa ini mengandung 25% N merupakan alternatif sumber N bagi tanaman. Unsur ikutannya yaitu klor (Cl) memiliki persentase yang signifikan sehingga dikuatirkan mempengaruhi pertumbuhan tanaman. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan percobaan lapangan menggunakan tanaman jagung manis dan bertujuan mempelajari pengaruh pemberian amonium klorida yang dikombinasikan dengan sumber kalium (K) yang berbeda terhadap pertumbuhan, produksi, dan serapan N dan Cl jagung manis. Selain itu dilakukan percobaan inkubasi tanah untuk mempelajari pengaruhnya pada pH tanah, kadar N tersedia, N total dan Cl tersedia tanah. Percobaan lapangan dilaksanakan di Kebun Pendidikan Cikabayan, Kampus IPB Darmaga dan percobaan inkubasi tanah dilakukan di Laboratorium Kesuburan Tanah, Dep. Ilmu Tanah dan Sumberdaya Lahan, Fakultas Pertanian, IPB. Percobaan lapangan dirancang secara acak kelompok dengan sembilan perlakuan yang terdiri dari 0%, 100%, 150%, dan 200% N yang dikombinasikan dengan sumber K dari KCl dan K2SO4. Sebagai pembanding sumber N adalah urea dengan dosis 100% N selanjutnya disebut sebagai perlakuan N standar. Parameter yang diamati yaitu tinggi, bobot tongkol dan brangkasan tanaman, dan serapan N dan Cl bagian biji, daun dan batang. Percobaan inkubasi tanah dirancang secara acak lengkap dengan perlakuan yang sama seperti percobaan lapangan. Parameter yang diamati yaitu pH tanah dan N-tersedia pada waktu inkubasi 15, 30 dan 45 hari, N total tanah dan Cl tersedia tanah pada akhir masa inkubasi tanah. Hasil percobaan lapangan menunjukkan pemberian amonium klorida dikombinasikan dengan sumber K yang berbeda berpengaruh nyata terhadap tinggi, bobot tongkol dan brangkasan tanaman, dan serapan N dan Cl jagung manis dibandingkan kontrol. Perlakuan N-amonium klorida dengan KCl maupun K2SO4 tidak menunjukkan perbedaan yang nyata terhadap pertumbuhan dan produksi tanaman dibandingkan N standar. Perlakuan dosis N tidak menunjukkan perbedaan nyata terhadap pertumbuhan dan produksi tanaman. Hasil percobaan inkubasi tanah menunjukkan perlakuan amonium klorida tidak menunjukkan perbedaan yang nyata pada kadar N tersedia, N total, dan Cl tersedia dibandingkan dengan kontrol namun nyata menurunkan pH tanah pada waktu inkubasi 45 hari dibandingkan dengan kontrol.
The growing population in Indonesia will have implications to the rising demand for agricultural production. High productivity can be achieved by meeting the needs of plants for nutrients, especially nitrogen (N). In Indonesia, urea fertilizer is widely used, and it is predicted that demand will rise in the coming years. Therefore, it is necessary to search for other types of N fertilizer as a complementary alternative to urea. Ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) is a by product in the soda ash industry. This substance containing 25% N is an alternative source of N for plants, but it also contains a significant amount of Chlorine (Cl), raising concern that it might influence plant growth. This study was conducted as field experiments using sweet corn plants. The aim of this research was to study addition of ammonium chloride combined with different sources of potassium (K) on growth, yield, and N and Cl uptake of sweet corn. In addition, soil incubation experiments were carried out to study the effect on soil pH, soil available N, total soil N and soil available Cl. Field experiments was conducted at Kebun Pendidikan Cikabayan, Kampus IPB Darmaga while soil and plant analysis, and soil incubation experiments were conducted at the Soil Fertility Laboratory, Department of Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture, IPB. The field experiment used a randomized block design with nine treatments consisting of 0%, 100%, 150%, and 200% of N dose combined with K sources from KCl and K2SO4. Urea treatment with 100% N was used as comparison and then it was referred as standard N treatment. Parameters observed were plant height, weight of cobs and plant stover, N dan Cl uptake from grains, leaves and stems. The soil incubation experiment used a completely randomized design with the same treatment as the field experiment. Parameters observed were soil pH and soil available N at 15, 30 and 45 days of incubation, total soil N and soil available Cl at the end of incubation. The results of the field experiment showed that the addition of ammonium chloride combined with different K sources had a significant effect on plant height, cob and plant stover weight, N and Cl uptake of sweet corn compared to control. The N-ammonium chloride treatment with KCl and K2SO4 had no significant effect on plant growth and yield compared to the standard N. The increasing of N dose had no significant effect on plant growth and yield compared to standard N dose. While the results of the soil incubation experiment showed that the addition of ammonium chloride had no significant effect on soil available N, total soil N and soil available Cl compared to control but significantly decreased the soil pH at 45 days of incubation compared to control.
