Gastrointestinal Nematode Infection of Cattle in West Lore Subdistrict of Poso Regency, Central Sulawesi

Abstract

The current prevalence of gastrointestinal nematodes of cattle in West Lore is not known. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence and intensity of gastrointestinal nematode infection in cattle in the West Lore sub district of Poso Regency in Central Sulawesi. Fecal samples were examined using simple floatation techniques, and the McMaster counting chamber was used for egg count per gram feces (EPGF). In this study the prevalence of gastrointestinal nematodes was analysed in relation to overall prevalence, intensity of eggs per gram of feces and age. Based on microscopic examination, the type of nematode eggs that were found were only Strongyle eggs in all samples. The overall prevalence based on the 41 fecal samples was found to be 58.54%. The majority intensity of eggs per gram of feces is 100 eggs per gram of feces at 29.26%. While it was found that the prevalence of gastrointestinal nematodes is higher in young cattle (65.38%) than in adult cattle (42.85%).
