Economic Benefit Analysis of Fishery Resource at Marine Protected Area of Karimunjawa National Park

Abstract

Marine ecosytem has many benefits that provide an important economic justification for establishing Marine Protected Area (MPA), but these are often not fully understood by local community surrounding and stakeholders. This research was aimed to distinguish whether the establishment of Taman Nasional Karimunjawa (TNKj) as a MPA has contributed economic benefits of fishery resource to the local community as well as the regional economy. The change of benefit or loss rate was calculated using productivity approach of Economic Valuation Method and an iconic simulation. Location Quotient (LQ) analysis was applied to see the contribution of fishery sub sector to regional economic of Jepara. To know the perception of fishermen, Descriptive method was used. The Result showed that at present the economic benefit of fishery wasn’t quite significant, this probably corresponded to the increase of destructive fishing activities prior to the establishment of TNKj in 1999. The contribution of fishery sub-sector to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Jepara in 1999-2004 declined. However the datas indicated that the benefit would be obtained in afew years, as sea environment degradation declined and conservation management became more effective. As MPA, sustainable aspect is the most important thing, therefore the economic development should be in line with the ecology. It needs good management and coordination among all stakeholders as well as wider involvement of local community. The concept of collaborative management is proper to examine for advanced research.
