Mangrove forests in Indonesia has declining, and so it preservation efforts are required. One way of mangrove forest is the used of satellite remote sensing technology. The aim of this study were to examine the ability of Landsat satellite imagery (Landsat 7 ETM + 8 OLI Tirs) in detecting mangrove using vegetation index (NDVI), and to measured IVI (Importance Value Index) of mangrove community in Cilacap, Central Java. Field assessment on mangrove was focused in measuring density, identifying species and zonation according to haphazard sampling in 10 sites. Landsat imagery were able to map and classified mangroves in Cilacap according to three different class; dense, medium, and sparse mangrove. Results of IVI (Importance Value Index) calculations revealed the ecological importance of Rhizhopora apiculata and Ceriops sp. in the mangrove community of Segara Anakan, Cilacap.
