Studi Patologi Kerang Hijau (Perna viridis) asal Muara Kamal, Teluk Jakarta

Abstract

Green mussel (Perna viridis) is a filter feeder organism that is abundant in nature and have a long life span. The mussel have become a biologic indicator for environmental contamination. Pathological conditions caused by environmental contaminants and infections can be observed by staining the tissue section. The aim of this study was to observe histopathological finding of green mussel cultured at Muara Kamal, Jakarta Bay. Twenty one green mussels of various size and age were observed. The lesions found were degenerative lesions such as pigmentation and loss of epithelial cilia. These lesions were considered due to low heavy metals contamination since the measurement of Hg, Pb, and Cd level still in the normal range. Hemocytes infiltration observed in some tissue were thought as body defense reaction. The protozoan Nematopsis spp. infection were detected in gills lumina, connective tissue of mantle and within digestive tract.
