      Abstract
Bamboo can be used as an alternative raw material for many wooden products. One of the promising products that can be developed from bamboo is a particleboard. However, previously experiment reported that some physical and mechanical properties of bamboo particleboard were lower than that of standard requirement. In order to improve the quality of bamboo particleboard, this research aimed to study the effect of acetic acid soaking pretreatment on physical and mechanical properties of Betung bamboo particleboard. Bamboo particle was soaked in 1, 2, and 3% acetic acid solution, respectively. Urea formaldehyde (UF) adhesive was used for binder which the target density of particleboard was set at 0.70 g/cm3. The UF bonding of bamboo particleboard with and without addition of hardener were used as control. Physical and mechanical properties of particleboard were tested in accordance with JIS A 5908:2003 standard. The result showed that acetic acid soaking pretreatment increases the physical properties of particleboard, nevertheless, it has not met the standard of Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS A 5908:2003). The mechanical properties of particleboard have met the standard of Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS A 5908:2003) for modulus of rupture (MOR), internal bond (IB) and Screw Holding Power. The increasing of acetic acid concentration the decreasing of board strength was observed, indicating that a part of chemical component of bamboo degraded by acid.
