Coconut water could be made into nata de coco that contain cellulose. The cellulose can be further chemically modified into cellulose derivates such as carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). Then CMC was used as an antibacterial hydrogel materials using crosslinking agents such as succinic acid, and ZnSO4 as an antibacterial agent. The synthesized CMC was characterized for the degree of substitution, the pH of a CMC solution of 1%, and moisture content. The CMCsuccinic acid was characterized based on infrared spectra. The difractogram and microphotograph showed that ZnSO4 was not converted into ZnO. The surface analysis of the highest swelling of CMC-succinic acid-ZnSO4 hydrogel using scanning electron microscopy. The swelling ability of the hydrogel increase with the increasing ZnSO4 concentration. The antibacterial test showed that the synthesized hydrogel inhibited Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli growth and potentialy used as an antibacterial hydrogel.
