      Abstract
      Operasi pengeprasan yang baik sangat menentukan keberhasilan budidaya ratun di perkebunan tebu. Saat ini, operasi pengeprasan tunggul tebu masih dilaksanakan secara manual oleh tenaga manusia menggunakan cangkul. Kepras manual ini kapasitas lapangnya rendah, biayanya mahal dan hasil pengeprasannya sering tidak sesuai dengan harapan. Beberapa dekade yang lalu, mesin kepras mekanis pernah diperkenalkan di beberapa kebun tebu di Indonesia, namun dilaporkan gagal karena persoalan pisau yang sering tumpul. Beberapa tahun yang lalu, penulis juga mengembangkan mesin kepras tebu tipe piringan berputar, yang hasilnya sangat memuaskan, namun masih mempunyai kendala yaitu terbatasnya lebar potong yang hanya sampai sekitar 25 cm. Karena itu penelitian ini dibuat dengan tujuan untuk mendesain dan menguji kinerja mesin kepras tebu yang berdasar pada pisau rotari, ditarik oleh traktor 4-roda dan ditenagai dari PTO. Piring pengepras mempunyai 8 pisau yang dipasang radial, dibuat bersudut 45-60 derajat. Hasil pengujian lapang menunjukkan bahwa kinerja terbaik adalah pada putaran pisau 780 rpm adan sudut kemiringan pisau 45 derajat. Torsi rata-rata adalah 42.0 Nm kedalaman pemotongan tanah rata-rata 13 cm dengan lebar potong rata-rata 37 cm.
       
      Good stubble shaving operation will determined the success of ratoon cultivation at sugar cane plantation. To day, stubble shaving operation is done manually by labor using hoe, therefore, it had low field capacity, high cost and inconsistence quality of stubble cuts. In the past, prototype of mechanized stubble shaver had been introduced at several sugar cane plantation but reported failed because of knife problem. Few years ago, a disc type stubble shaver had been developed and succesfully tested but had problem of cutting width limited to about 25 cm. The objective of this research is, therefore, to develope a rotary knife based stubble shaver which designed to have cutting width of about 35 cm, and able to cut stubble at depth up to 10 cm beneath soil surface. The developed prototype was tractor driven and powered by tractor’PTO. The stubble shaver had 8 knife which positioned radially, and had 45-60 degrees of cutting inclination. Field tests showed that stubble shaving of sugar cane with rotary knife had a better performance in 780 rpm and 45 degrees of cutting inclination. Average torque was 42.0Nm with average cutting depth of about 13 cm, and working width was 37 cm.
