      Abstract

Fish oil from canning byproduct has poor quality and the utilization still limited for feed, as a result it needs to be purified. Fish oil purification process can be done by utilizing variety of adsorbent such as bentonite and attapulgite. The purpose of this study was to purify Sardinella sp. oil from canning byproduct with a combination of bentonite and attapulgite adsorbent treatment to obtain fish oil with food grade quality. The best treatment was the gradual addition of two adsorbents, firstly attapulgite 3 % then followed by addition of bentonite 3 %. The treatment resulted purified fish oil with peroxide value at 6.00 meq/kg, anisidine value of 1.59 meq/kg, total oxidation of 13.59 meq/kg, and oil clarity level at wavelength 700 nm was 92.5 %. The lowest of free fatty acid content was the gradual combination of bentonite 1.5 % and attapulgite 1.5 % was 4.43 %.
