Penentuan Waktu Optimal Koleksi dan Evaluasi Kapasitas Semen Ulat Sutera Liar Attacus atlas (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae)

Abstract

The objectives of the research were to determine the optimum time for semen collection and to evaluate semen capacity of A. atlas imagoes. Semen were obtained from 15 imagoes every 2 hours after emerged from coccon using microtube until no more semen in ejaculate. Immediately after collection, the semen volume and spermatozoa concentration were evaluted. The results showed that A. atlas imagoes emerged mostly at 04.00 to 08.00 pm (67%), the optimal time for semen collection was 4 hours after imago had emerged from the coccon with volume was 0.57±0.38 mL ranging from 0.06 to 1.31 mL. Ejaculation frequency were 3 to 5 times per imago with the total semen volume were 1.27±0.50 mL ranging from 0.31 to 1.76 mL. The sperm concentration was 1141±1608 x 106/mL ranging 75-5943 x 106/mL. The average of semen capacity was 1.433±2.569 x 109 cells ranging 0.121-9.687 x 109 cells.
