Assessment on the status of fishing responsibility is one of initial steps in determining a strategy to develop sustainable fisheries. The capture fisheries activities studied in Kapuas Regency covers local fishing activities in freshwater and sea. Fishing units operated in marine waters are lampara, sungkur, gillnet and longline, while those operated in the river are togo, rakkang, gillnet and longline. This study applied an assessment on 8 types of fishing unit which represent the studied fisheries using the 13 criteria of responsible fishing. This study aims to determine the status of local fishing technology and strategies to develop sustainable fisheries at the Kapuas Regency. The technology of the current capture fisheries are considered good because it shows five indicators with excellent category, seven indicators with good category and one indicator with bad category. Both sungkur and marine longline were the best active and passive gears operated at the sea respectively while surface gillnets was the best passive gear operated in the rivers. One of the fisheries management strategies identified was public campaign of good handling practice on unwanted catches or discards to promote fish survivorship.
