Visible / Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument onboard Suomi NPP (National Polar-orbiting Partnership) satellite has the same performance as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) intrument on the Terra/Aqua satellite that used to detect sea surface temperatures (SST) in the thermal remote sensing. This study aims to estimate the SST of the NPP satellite imagery from September 2012 to August 2013 in the south of Java waters, then compared with the SST results from Aqua-MODIS satellite data and in situ generated by Argo Float. A regression analysis were used to compare SST value retrieve from NPP satellite and Aqua-MODIS with the in situ data. The SST algorithm that used by VIIRS and MODIS instrument is Non-Linear Multi Channel SST (NLSST). The highest average SST values were found in February which is 29.866 °C and the lowest average SST values were found in August which is 26.521 C. The comparison with the NPP satellite Aqua-MODIS shows the coefficient of determination ( R2 ) NPP satellite is closer to 1 than the Aqua- MODIS
