The influence of individual charateristic and the role of extension worker on increasing household food diversification

The Government of Indonesia has launched accelereted diversification of food consumption program (P2KP). This program aims to encourage people in improving food consumption patterns, nutritious, balanced, and safe nutition. Bogor district is one of the districts managing P2KP program. The program involves Food Security and Extension Agency for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (BKP4K) as program implementers. The objectives of the research are: (1) to identify community perceptions of participants and non-participants of P2KP program towards food diversification; (2) to analyze the effect of individual characteristics on community perceptions toward food diversification; (3) to analyze the effect of individual characteristics to the level of diversification of household; (4) to analyze the effect extension role on community perceptions toward food diversification; (5) to analyze the effect of extension of the role on the level of food diversification of household and; (6) to formulate extension strategies to improve household food diversification. Research using ex Post facto design. Field research was conducted in sub District of Dramaga, Cibungbulang and Ciomas of Bogor District West Java Province from February 2013 to June 2013. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Quantitative analysis used descriptive and inferential statistics. The analysis consisted of frequency distributions, while the inferential statistics used stepwise regression analysis based on SPSS 17.0 software. The results showed: (1) perception of P2KP program participants and non participant at the high category with a mean score of 2.97 and 2.73 respectively of a maximum score of 3.0; (2) the individual characteristics that significantly affect perceptions in terms of diversification are: age, formal education and keterdedahan on TV and newspaper media; (3) the individual characteristics that affect the level of food diversification of household is age, education formal and income; (4) the roles of extension personnel as communicator and motivator affected significantly the community perception of food diversification is the role as role as a communicator and motivator; (5) the role of extension personnel did not affect the level of food diversification of household; (6) need to change food diversification extension strategy both in terms of the target extension to the method used, for example the father and adolescents as subjects of education and the use of television media to explain the importance of diversification.
