      Abstract
      Buckwheat is a crop that has many benefits such as for alternatif food and sustainable agriculture in Indonesia. This study was conducted to determine the effect of shading and plant spacing on growth and development, radiation interception, radiation use efficiency and heat accumulation on buckwheat cultivar Harunoibuki. The experiment was conducted in May – Juli 2012 in Kopo Intermediateland, Cijulang, Cisarua, West Java at 600 meters above sea level. This study used nested experimental design with two factors and three replications; shading conditions of buckwheat: N0 (no shading) and N1 (shading by paranet 55%) as main factor; while plant spacing: P1 (200 plants/m2) and P2 (50 plants/m2) as second factor. Shading and plant spacing have significant effect on height, leaf number, and total dry mater of plant. Population density of 200 plants/m2 was able to intercept radiation 10 – 30% more than population density of 50 plants/m2. Radiation use efficiency on treatment of P1/N0, P2/N0, P1/N1, and P2/N1 were 3.11, 2.13, 2.76, and 2.65 g/MJ. Plants with the shading required 1380 0C day and plants without shading required 1239 0C day until harvest time. Plant without shading has double productivity compared to plant with shading.
