Process of reduction light by scattering and absorption processes is known as attenuation. The aim of this research was to determine the attenuation coefficient of water column in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. The field data collection was conducted in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico in April 2000. Downwelling irradiance (Ed) data were used to calculate attenuation coefficient (Kd). Data were filtered by using Curve Fitting Tool. The location of this research was divided into four locations: A, B, C, and D. The results showed that Kd in site A ranged from 0.039 - 0.137 m-1, in location B ranged from 0.026 - 0.060 m-1, in location C ranged from 0.015 - 0.036 m-1, and in location D ranged from 0.014 - 0.049 m-1. Distribution of Kd values increased from blue to red region. However, in the green region showed lower values. Result also showed that Kd values between study sites were significantly different (Kruskal-Wallis test, α=0.05). This result indicated that water column characteristic among locations were significantly different
