Isolation of the biotransformation product artemisinin from endophitic bacteria is a new alternative for the production of the multidrug-resistant malaria compounds. The bacteria strain, AT 12, has been proved particularly potential as an artemisinin source (0,75% w/w). This study was carried out to isolate and to identify the biotransformation product artemisinin as an antimalarial active compound from endophitic microorganism strains of Artemisia annua. The product was determined using TLC, HPLC-UV, IR spectroscopy, and GC-MS methods. The initial positively identification of artemisinin was indicated with the same Rf. The IR spectrum exhibited the characteristic bands for 8-lactone (1750-1735 cm²¹, 1250-1111 cm²¹) and endoperoxide function (~1115 cm²¹, 890-830 cm²¹). Comparison of chromatogram data of the HPLC-UV with the standard convinced they were the same compound. As a result, the GC-MS gave a positively identification for the majority of GC peaks. The mass spectrum of the peak (tr 27.94 min) has a molecular ion of artemisinin with one hydrogen loss at m/z 281, representing (M. - 1).
