      Abstract
Indonesia is a country with high biodiversity. Approximately there are 4000 tree species in Indonesian natural forest which are potential to produce timber of several qualities. One of wood utilization deal with Indonesia as maritime country is the raw material for fishing vessel manufacturing. Fishing vessels in Indonesia are mainly produced from wood, especially for the hull and mast of the vessel. The manufacturing process is still traditionally. Recently, due to the scarcity of wood species both quantitatively and qualitatively, the manufacturing of fishing vessel in many areas in Indonesia forces many problems. The aim of the research, therefore, to identify wood species which is used traditionally for shipping vessel manufacturing by studying their anatomical structure, macro- and microscopically. After identification, using their specific gravity (SG), strength class as well as durability class as the additional, the proper alternative wood species could be determined.
