Family Communication, Self-Esteem, and Academic Achievement of The First-Year Students of Bogor Agricultural University Academic Year 2011/2012
Komunikasi Keluarga, Self-Esteem, dan Prestasi Akademik Mahasiswa Tingkat Persiapan Bersama (TPB) Institut Pertanian Bogor Tahun Akademik 2011/ 2012
Abstract
This study aim to analyze the family communication that consists of general family communication and parents-child communication (socio and concept-oriented communication), self-esteem, and academic achievement of the first-year students of IPB. This research involved 85 male students and 120 female students who selected with stratified propotional random sampling. Independent t-test showed that there is significant differences of communication that adopted by parents between male and female students. The regression test results show that the mother's education and father’s income had a positive effect on students self-esteem. Meanwhile, the father's education had a negative effect on students self-esteem. General family communication had a positive effect on self-esteem and a negative effect to the academic achievement of students. Socio-oriented communication that adopted by parents had a positive effect on students self-esteem. Based on these results, parents and IPB’s support system, such as counselors, should help the students to solve their problem, particularly for students who have self-esteem and academic achievement problems. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis komunikasi keluarga yang diukur menjadi dua bagian, yaitu komunikasi keluarga secara umum dan komunikasi orang tua-anak (komunikasi berorientasi sosial dan konsep), self-esteem, dan prestasi akademik mahasiswa Tingkat Persiapan Bersama (TPB) Institut Pertanian Bogor dengan melibatkan sebanyak 85 mahasiswa dan 120 mahasiswi yang dipilih secara stratified propotional random sampling. Hasil uji beda menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan positif nyata komunikasi yang diterapkan oleh orang tua antara mahasiswa TPB laki-laki dan perempuan. Hasil uji regresi menunjukkan bahwa lama pendidikan ibu, dan pendapatan ayah berpengaruh positif terhadap self-esteem mahasiswa TPB, sedangkan lama pendidikan ayah berpengaruh negatif terhadap self-esteem. Komunikasi keluarga secara umum berpengaruh positif terhadap self-esteem, dan berpengaruh negatif terhadap prestasi akademik mahasiswa TPB. Komunikasi berorientasi sosial yang diterapkan oleh orang tua berpengaruh positif terhadap self-esteem mahasiswa TPB. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, orang tua serta sistem pendukung IPB, seperti konselor sebaiknya membantu mahasiswa TPB dalam menyelesaikan masalah, terutama bagi mahasiswa TPB yang memiliki masalah self-esteem dan prestasi akademik.
