Efektivitas Komunikasi Antar Etnis. Kasus: Etnis Arab Dan Etnis Sunda Di Kelurahan Empang, Bogor Selatan

Abstract

This study is focused on the effectiveness of communication between two different ethnics: Arabic and Sundanese. The objective of the study was to determine 1) to what extent is the correlation between the communication motivation and its effectiveness in inter-ethnic communication, 2) to what extent is the correlation between communication knowledge and its effectiveness in inter-ethnic communication, and 3) to what extent is the correlation between communication skill and its effectiveness in inter-ethnic communication. The research showed that the communication motivation was related to the effectiveness of communication between the Arabic and Sundanese ethnics. The higher the motivation, the lower was the feeling of being offended and awkward during interaction. Of the four dimensions, need to avoid diffuse anxiety obtained the highest value. Both ethnics can avoid offended and awkward feeling because they feel save when communicating each others. The knowledge of communication was also correlated to the effectiveness of communication. The higher the knowledge of communication, the lower was the feeling of being offended and awkward as indicated during interaction. Of the four dimensions, the knowledge to collect or get information obtained the highest value. Both ethnics have a good knowledge of the other speakers ways of communication by looking at and interacting directly. Communication skill was also correlated to the effectiveness of communication between the ethnic groups. The higher the communication skill, the lower was the feeling of being offended and awkward as indicated during interaction. The skill to adapt behavior got the highest value. The adapted skill was seen as the Arabic and Sundanese favored to use understandable forms of language to avoid offense and awkwardness during interaction.
