Personal hygiene is very important in food handling practices. Improper personal hygiene of the food handler can cause foodborne illness due to the occurrence of Staphylococcus aureus. The aim of this study was to observe the occurrence of S. aureus from hands and clothes of food handlers in canteens the Bogor Agriculture University Dramaga. Thirty nine food handlers were chosen randomly from sixty seven food handlers become respondents for questionnaire about personal hygiene in handling food and detecting S. aureus on hand and clothes. The detection of S. aureus on hands and clothes was used RODAC method and analysed for the presence of S. aureus in order to assess the levels of contamination and to establish possible relationships. A majority respondents had good practices of personal hygiene. Staphylococcus aureus was detected on 100% of hands and clothes samples of food handlers. Nevertheless, the correlation between the occurance of S. aureus on hands and clothes of food handlers was not significant statistically (P>0.05). It is necessary to have a great attention to the presence of S. aureus on hands of food handlers in the university canteen since it could be the source of pathogen cross contamination to the food that can cause foodborne illness.
