Tidal swamp (rawa lebak) is a type of wetland located along both sides of major rivers and their tributaries, characterized by flat topography, seasonal flooding during the rainy season, and dry conditions during the dry season. When water levels range from saturated soil conditions to approximately 30 cm depth, the land is suitable for rice cultivation, while other food crops can be grown during dry periods.
The potential area of tidal swamp land in South Sumatra is extensive, covering approximately 2.0 million hectares, with about 79,200 hectares located in Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI) Regency that has recently been utilized by farmers. The hydrological conditions of tidal swamp land are highly suitable for rice cultivation, making rice a dominant component of farming systems in these areas. Research using improved high-yielding rice varieties indicates that productivity in swamp lebak areas can reach 5.0–7.0 tons of harvested dry grain per hectare. This demonstrates strong potential for increasing agricultural production and farmers’ income through the development of integrated farming systems in tidal swamp environments.
