      Zeolit Alam Teraktivasi Basa untuk Pemurnian Bioetanol

      Abstract
      Utilization of bioethanol in mixing with fossil fuel greatly depends on its purity. To get high purity, adsorptive separation method with zeolite as adsorbent had been developed. Both natural and synthetic zeolite could be use as adsorbent. Adsorption properties of natural zeolite could be improved through chemical activation by adding NaOH. Based on experiment, activation of natural zeolite by NaOH increased its surface area, therefore, improved its adsorption properties. Moreover, the activated natural zeolite, such as clinoptilolite, had wider surface area than the synthetic hydrosodalite synthesized from natural kaolin, which were 27,93 m2/g and 4,67 m2/g respectively. Gas chromatography data showed that ethanol purification through adsorptive separation by natural zeolite gave better result than the synthetic zeolite.
       
      Pemanfaatan bioetanol sebagai campuran bahan bakar fosil sangat bergantung pada kemurniaannya. Untuk mencapai kemurnian yang tinggi, telah dikembangkan metode separasi adsorptif dengan zeolit sebagai adsorben. Baik zeolit alam maupun zeolit sintetik, dapat digunakan sebagai adsorben. Kemampuan adsorpsi zeolit alam dapat ditingkatkan melalui aktivasi dengan penambahan NaOH. Berdasarkan penelitian, aktivasi zeolit alam dengan NaOH meningkatkan luas permukaan zeolit sehingga daya adsorpsinya juga meningkat. Bahkan, zeolit alam jenis klinoptilolit yang telah diaktivasi memiliki luas permukaan yang lebih besar daripada hidrosodalit hasil sintesis dari kaolin alam, berturut turut sebesar 27,93 m2/g dan 4,67 m2/g. Data kromatografi gas menunjukkan bahwa pemurnian etanol melalui separasi adsorptif oleh zeolit alam memberikan hasil yang lebih baik daripada zeolit sintetik.
