Strategy of Mangrove Ecotourism Development at Tanjung Bara Beach Sangatta, Region East Kutai, East Kalimantan Province.

Abstract

Mangrove area at Tanjung Bara Beach, Sangatta was included PT. Kaltim Prima Coal (PT. KPC) area which was a National Vital Object or OBVITNAS area. The development of mangrove ecotourism at Tanjung Bara Beach Sangatta had not reached optimal point because of indistinct aims. The main objective of this research was to formulated strategy of sustainable mangrove ecotourism at Tanjung Bara Beach with three research aspects : (1) identification of ecotourism supply; (2) identification of ecotourism demand; and (3) strategy of mangrove ecotourism. This study was conducted at mangrove area of Tanjung Bara Beach for three months from January to April 2010. This research used nonexperimental method that are observation, descriptive analysis and literature study. Supply and demand potential was valued by criteria analysis of ADOODTWA. SWOT analysis was used to formulated the strategy of mangrove ecotourism development at Tanjung Bara Beach which was based on valuation of ADO-ODTWA aspects. Result showed that feasibility level of tourism attractions (204 point) and supporting elements (472 point) were on high level. It mean that mangrove forest at Tanjung Bara was very potential to be developed as mangrove ecotourism area. Based on SWOT analysis and grand strategy selection matrix, position of strategy of mangrove ecotourism at Tanjung Bara Beach was on quadrant I (Strength-Opportunity). The strategy that could be developed at Tanjung Bara Beach were (1) development of mangrove ecotourism products of special interest mangrove ecotourism; (2) increasing facilities of mangrove ecotourism; (3) increasing quality of human resources in mangrove ecotourism; (4) make networking on website of mangrove ecotourism; and (5) increasing coordination with the government Kutai Timur in mangrove conservation

Kawasan mangrove Pantai Tanjung Bara Sangatta merupakan bagian kawasan yang dikelola pertambangan batubara PT. Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) sebagai kawasan Obyek Vital Nasional (OBVITNAS). Pembangunan sarana ke arah pantai telah membuka peluang bagi masyarakat untuk memanfaatkan jasa lingkungan mangrove Pantai Tanjung Bara sebagai sumberdaya alam yang potensial untuk dijadikan daya tarik ekowisata. Potensi ini perlu dikembangkan sebagai obyek dan atraksi yang menarik beserta unsur penunjang yang mendukung.
