The development of food crops subsector in supporting regional development in Majalengka Regency

Food crops subsector is expected to be a strategic sector for regional development in Majalengka regency in the future because it based on local resources. The purposes of this study are : (1) identifying condition and potency of food crops subsector in Majalengka regency, (2) identifying the role of food crops subsector in regional economy, (3) identifying superior commodities, (4) exploring perceptions of stakeholders regarding food crops development priorities (5) formulating the direction of food crops subsector development for regional development in Majalengka. The data analysis used are Location Quotient (LQ), Shift Share, Input-Output (I-O), Analytical Hierarcy Process (AHP), land suitability and avaibility evaluation. The result showed that food crops subsector is a basis sector with some commodities have superiority in planting area, harvesting area, production and number of trees. Food crops subsector has the highest contribution in gross regional domestic product (GDP) up to 23,80% and contributed to total output up to 16,23%. However, it has low linkages with other sectors. An analysis result in macro, meso and micro levels showed that paddy, corn, soybean, mangos, banana and melinjo are superior commodities in Majalengka regency. Based on stakeholders perception, three of the priority commodities are paddy, corn, and mangos. While, the priority of agribusiness subsystem is on farming system and supporting aspects of the priorities is improving human resources. The direction in the development of food crops subsector are to improve the performance and enhance the role and linkages with other sector.
