      Upwelling Prediction by Analyzing Wind Pattern at Makassar Strait

      Abstract
      Geographical position of Makassar Strait in between Sulawesi Sea and Sea is the main path of Indonesia Through Flow (ITF) causing high variability of oceanographic conditions within Makassar Strait. This condition is also influenced by the mass of water in the starits and by oceanographic variability outside the strait and climatic parameters such as rainfall, evaporation, wind movement patterns and humidity. The pattern of wind movement in addition to water temperature effects the movement of the mass of water. This study aims to predict the upwelling in waters of Makassar Strait based on the analysis of the wind movement patterns. The Ekman mass transport as the moon parameter is calculated in the Makassar Strait which has vertical velocity 0.557 m/s-2.136 m/s.
       
      Posisi geografis perairan Selat Makasar yang terletak di antara Laut Sulawesi dan Laut Jawa merupakan lintasan utama Arus Lintas Indonesia (Arlindo). Hal ini menyebabkan kondisi oseanografi Selat Makasar mempunyai variabilitas tinggi, selain dipengaruhi oleh massa air dalam selat, juga dipengaruhi oleh variabilitas oseanografi di luar selat dan keadaan iklim seperti curah hujan, penguapan, pola pergerakan angin dan kelembaban udara. Pola pergerakan angin mempengaruhi suhu perairan dan pergerakan massa air di perairan. Penelitian ini bertujuan menduga penaikan massa air di perairan Selat Makasar berdasarkan analisis pola pergerakan angin. Pendekatan yang digunakan dengan menggunakan Ekman massa transport. Penaikan massa air di perairan Selat Makasar dengan kecepatan vertikal relatif kecil 0,557 mldtk -2,136 mldtk.
