      Abstract
      Stand structure can be used to characterize the condition of plantation forests. Until now, there is still lacking of studies that investigate the stand structure of plantation forests in educational forests. This study, therefore, was conducted to analyze the distribution of diameter, height, and basal-area of Schima wallichii stands in Gunung Walat Educational Forest (GWEF). This study was conducted in GWEF during March to April 2011. Stand variable data i.e. : diameter, height, and basal-area of S. wallichii stands were measured from two 1 ha sample plots. Trees diameter were measured using phi-band, trees height were measured using suunto-hypsometer, and basal-area of each tree was calculated based on the tree diameter. In addition, name of tree species in each sample plot was also recorded in a tally-sheet. The stand variable data were grouped into several classes using frequency distribution tables, which were then displayed using histograms. To clarify the shape of stand distributions, the data were also analyzed using normal probability distributions. Skewness index (using Pearson coefficient) was used to measure the skewness of stand distributions compared to the normal distribution. The results of this study showed that the distributions of stand diameter and basal-area were positive-skew, indicating that the mode and median of stand diameter and basal-area were lower than their means. In contrast, the stand height distribution was negative-skew, indicating that the mode and median of stand height were higher than its mean. Therefore, this study concluded that the S. wallichii stands of GWEF were dominated by relatively smaller but higher trees. This finding suggest that stand thinning is required to optimize the growth of S. wallichii stands in GWEF.
       
      Struktur tegakan dapat digunakan untuk mengetahui karakteristik suatu hutan tanaman. Sampai saat ini, belum banyak penelitian yang mempelajari struktur tegakan hutan tanaman di kawasan hutan pendidikan. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menganalisis bentuk sebaran diameter, tinggi, dan luas bidang dasar tegakan puspa (Schima wallichii) di Hutan Pendidikan Gunung Walat (HPGW). Penelitian ini dilakukan di HPGW pada bulan Maret sampai April 2011. Data peubah tegakan puspa yaitu : diameter, tinggi, dan luas bidang dasar diukur dari dua plot contoh masing-masing berukuran 1 ha. Diameter pohon diukur menggunakan phi-band, tinggi pohon diukur menggunakan suunto-hypsometer, dan luas bidang dasar dihitung berdasarkan diameter pohonnya. Selain itu, nama jenis pohon dicatat juga pada tally-sheet. Data peubah tegakan dikelompokkan kedalam beberapa kelas menggunakan tabel sebaran frekuensi yang disajikan pula dalam bentuk histogram. Untuk memperjelas bentuk sebaran tegakan, data dianalisis juga menggunakan fungsi sebaran normal. Indeks kemenjuluran (menggunakan koefisien Pearson) digunakan untuk mengukur tingkat kemenjuluran bentuk sebaran tegakan dibandingkan dengan bentuk sebaran normal. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa sebaran diameter dan luas bidang dasar tegakan puspa memiliki koefisien kemenjuluran positif, yang menunjukkan bahwa modus dan median dari diameter tegakan lebih rendah dibanding nilai rata-ratanya. Sebaliknya, sebaran tinggi tegakan memiliki koefisien kemenjuluran negatif, yang menunjukkan bahwa modus dan median dari tinggi tegakan lebih tinggi dibanding nilai rata-ratanya. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa bahwa tegakan puspa di HPGW umumnya didominasi oleh pohon-pohon yang relatif kecil tetapi tinggi. Temuan tersebut mempertegas bahwa tindakan penjarangan tegakan diperlukan untuk mengoptimalkan pertumbuhan tegakan puspa di HPGW.
