Rice is the main staple food in Indonesia, and its supply has largely been met through lowland rice production. Meanwhile, upland rice (padi gogo) productivity remains low, at around 2.2 tons/ha (BPS, 1996). This low productivity is partly caused by blast disease, which is induced by the fungus Pyricularia oryzae Cav. This disease is not only a problem in upland rice cultivation but has also begun to spread into irrigated rice fields.
Efforts to address this issue include the development of blast-resistant varieties through breeding programs that consider the three main factors influencing disease development: the pathogen, the host, and the environment. Blast disease can attack all parts of the rice plant throughout its growth stages. Therefore, resistance testing at the seedling stage alone does not adequately represent true field resistance.
For this reason, it is necessary to evaluate resistance to both leaf blast and neck blast, as well as to study the patterns of plant resistance responses to blast disease throughout the plant’s growth period.
