Kontroversi Konsep GL Ycaemicindex Pada Penatalaksanaan Diet Penderita Diabetes Melitus
Abstract
Since introduced in 1981 by David Jenkins, concept of glycaemic index is considered to be the corner stone in the nutrition intervention approaches for diabetes, weight reduction, and physical performance. Concept of glycaemic index is based on the understanding that carbohydrates digested and absorbed slowly will be released to blood stream gradually. It claims that we can choose the right kind of carbohydrate for our lifestyle and our wellbeing. Concept of glycemic index more emphasize on the type of carbohydrate than on its amount in maintaining blood glucose level. However, effects of diet with high or low glycaemic index on insulin action are still controversial at this time. Although a few of studies revealing the role of glycaem ic index in glycaemic control, on the other hand, there are many studies doubting the effectiveness of glycemic index in the management of diabetes. The American Diabetes Association (ADA recommends that the energy density is more important than the type of carbohydrate.
